It seems I was mistaken please disregard my information about this years event.

Shannon,
Your report looks inaccurate to me. I was at the meeting. We all agreed a shared event would be great. And Chris went back with that answer to fire company. Not with “maybe”. But with “Yes-shared event”.  Reason being we already were planning a dance and 3 day activities for whole family. Rather than say No, or maybe, the answer was an invitation to make it co-event.
There will be many versions I’m sure. Just saying, I was there. And I wanted you to know. Dan was there also.

Hello,

This has been really frustrating for all organizations involved. Dan is partially right, the intrepid Lori Cook always organized the dance on Friday as a PVFD fundraiser only. Her and her crew would camp out at AWWay and put on both the dance and the beef and bean which was a Grange fundraiser.  What rockstars.

PVFD approached the Grange this year to ask about a dance and were told maybe. They went ahead with planning and were finally told no the grange wanted to do their own dance. However the band had already been hired and the band could not move their date.

Neither organization thinks this situation is ideal and I seriously doubt it will happen again.

Best,
Shannon

I totally agree Dylan. Thanks for putting this out there it’s very disappointing especially when people and resources are so slim these days. I do not want to see our time and money wasted by this division. Is it too late to change this? Cooperation is key.

Thanks for sharing the back story Dan. It is disappointing and confusing how it unfolded this way. My hope is that both events will be fun for all and help both invaluable community resources. And maybe next year it can either be a shared event, or different date chosen for the fire company. All in the Mattole benefit from cooperation, and lose when we don’t.

It is disappointing. Now let’s give a little backstory.
The grange has always put on 4th of July dances and Lori, she was putting on the concerts that the fire dept piggybacked on. When I hear old timers in town it’s always the grange dance not the fire dept dance. We have a lot of things to fix at the grange or there will be no place to hold these events.
We had a meeting with the fire dept that wanted to have the dance Friday night. Because we had the kids event Friday We offered to do a 50/50 on Saturday night. They declined and the next week moved their dance to Saturday night the same day as us. I agree Dylan that is very disappointing.

It’s disappointing to see that the grange is holding a dance the same day and time as the Petrolia Fire departments big fundraiser.
I wasn’t in attendance to hear how this decision was made, but I have to say I find it counter to good community planning. Residents will now need to make a choice to support the fire department or the Grange. I don’t think this will serve either organization well.
My two cents…..
