FWD message:

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of fellow guest editors Zackery Reed, John Paul Cook, and Ian Jones, I am pleased to announce a call for extended abstracts for an upcoming special issue (SI) for the International Journal of Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education. The SI will focus on the teaching and learning of equivalence at the postsecondary level. Please see the attached pdf for more information.

The SI focuses on a need for more exchange and consolidation of ideas related to the teaching and learning of equivalence at the university level. The objectives of the special issue are to:

  • Curate a set of papers showcasing equivalence as a fundamental, cross-cutting mathematical topic. By highlighting common work that is being done in the field, we can provide a rich snapshot of the current state of the field on equivalence. Ultimately, we desire to elaborate the nature of equivalence in specific domains and explore its role as a cross-cutting idea.
  • Promote communication (and potentially collaboration) among different research groups who are studying equivalence. We desire more conversation among such researchers, and we intend for this SI to raise awareness of other lines of research and foster correspondence between researchers. To engender this, we will facilitate a commentary-writing process among author teams.
We thus welcome extended abstracts for theoretical and empirical papers that report on aspects of equivalence in undergraduate mathematics education including (but not limited to):
  • The nature of mathematical equivalence, including domain-specific and cross-domain insights about equivalence
  • Insights into postsecondary students’ reasoning about and learning of equivalence
  • Insights about effective ways to teach equivalence at the postsecondary level
  • Potential connections between equivalence at the university and K-12 levels, perhaps through a focus on pre-service teacher populations
Note that extended abstracts of up to 1,000 words are due via email on October 15, 2025.

Please feel free to reach out to the guest editors with any questions (contact information is provided in the attached document). Also, please share with any other colleagues who may be interested in submitting an abstract.

Thank you!
