Dear Colleagues,

The Editorial Board of Mathematics Education Research and Practice (MERP) is pleased to announce the launch of the Theory/Practice Forum, a new, ongoing section dedicated to examining and bridging the persistent gap between academic research and classroom reality. Growing directly from MERP’s founding mission, this recurring space treats classroom practice not as peripheral, but as a central, generative source of theoretical inquiry.

To inaugurate this initiative, our upcoming issue features a theoretically ambitious and practically motivated essay by Professor David Kirshner of Louisiana State University, titled “The Theory/Practice Gap in Mathematics Education.” Alongside MERP’s established Practice Articles, the Forum positions the journal as a comprehensive platform that honors both rigorous scholarship and the irreducible complexity of teaching.

We invite scholars and practitioners alike to participate in this iterative dialogue by submitting original essays of up to 6,000 words, which will undergo standard peer review. The Forum also welcomes reader responses of up to 3,000 words, fostering a dynamic cycle of essay, response, and author reply designed to move the field forward.

To be considered for publication in the September issue, responses to Professor Kirshner’s inaugural essay must be received by August 25, 2026. For subsequent contributions, responses will be due on the 25th of the month preceding the publication month.

We look forward to your contributions and the vital conversations ahead.

Sincerely,
The Editorial Office
Mathematics Education Research and Practice (MERP)
