For Cryogenic Services at Temp -196 degree Celsius (17 Kelvin) Pipe of ASTM 312 TP 304 L is suitable?

Dear Experts,

Currently I am working on a project of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) for Integrated Cryogenic Engine Testing Facility (ICET), for bidding in that services are Liquid Hydrogen, Liquid Oxygen, Liquid Helium, Liquid Nitrogen, Gaseous Hydrogen, Gaseous Oxygen, Gaseous Nitrogen, Gaseous Helium.

For SS Seamless Pipes client has given three options for material ASTM 312 TP 304L/ ASTM 312TP 316L/ ASTM 312TP 321. 

Kindly suggest me the suitable material for the same that gives economical and best design.

Dear Vivek,

Please let me share the following info I have on this subject: 


Cryogenic Steel ASTM A553 Type 1 and  Type 2, / ASME SA-553/SA-553M Q&T 8% and 9% Ni-alloy Steel.  

Ideal for containment or transportation of liquefied gases such as LNG, oxygen, nitrogen and argon which need to be stored at a temperatures below -196°C. The material is good for any pressure containing application with excellent resistance to low temperature brittle fracture.
Many of the pressurized storage tanks designed to hold these gases are double walled with an insulation layer to minimise any generation in heat. Considerations should be made not only to the material used but also the fittings required which will also include piping and valves.

Hello Vivek,

 

Your query is on the best compatible materials for :-Liquid Hydrogen, Liquid Oxygen, Liquid Helium, Liquid Nitrogen, Gaseous Hydrogen, Gaseous Oxygen, Gaseous Nitrogen, Gaseous Helium environments. The design temperatures for all of these gases in liquefied stages vary from -160 deg C to -196 deg C.

 

Amongst the 3 grades mentioned below, 304L and 316L would easily meet the cryogenic requirements down up to -196 Deg C. SS 321 could be a subjective choice below -160 Deg C.

 

The requirements are forCryogenic Engine Testing Facilitywhich is not child’s play, hence one has to understand and follow the guidelines of ISRO.After all they the designers and owners of these systems.

 

Discussions on these “sensitive issues” may not be advisable.

 

Welding of these alloys (304L and 36L) has to be very controlled, regulated and to be done in clean room. Ferrite in the weld should not exceed 2%, or else meeting impact and lateral expansion properties would not be possible.

They are more difficult to weld tham austenitic ss but cheaper. 304 and 316 are more reliable

ASTM 312 TP304L Suitable base on my experience, currently im involved with LNG TANK EPCC,all the pipe work we use 304L.

Dear experts,

For Cryogenic applications which involves Minor Welding, I would suggest to use SS304LN, SS316LN. I would say there no economical replacement for these grades with same properties.

They have excellent impact toughness values even at -196 degrees they would show more than 80J value.

But due care has to be taken during welding since these grades are susceptible for liquation cracking.
