Hi everybody

What is meaning of " -1 " in electrode E7018-1
Is it indicate hydrogen diffusion

What is the difference between E7018 & E7018-1, only impact test or
material composition also

Hai,

"-1"  designate that the electrode meets the requirement of improved toughness or impact.

"HZ" is using to designate the hydrogen diffusion. ie 'Z' ml of Hydrogen per 100g of deposited metal, where Z=4,8 or 16 (refer ASME Sec II part C SFA 5.1 or AWS A5.1)

E7018-1 have same usability and weld metal composition as E7018, except the manganese content set high range  and these electrodes are intended for welds requiring a lower transition temperature than is normally available from E7018 electrodes.

E7018  avg min impact 27J @ -30DegC

E7018-1 avg min impact 27J @ -45DegC

Can any throw light why water filling is needed for such a functional test?

The (-1) = low temp impact
Refer ASME Sec II Part C –Specifications for Welding Rods, Electrodes,and FillerSFA 5.1:
A “−1” designator following classification identifies an electrode which meets optional supplemental impact requirements at a lower temperature than required for the classification

No. but in E7018-1H4R
H4 = hydrogen diffusion level 4 mL(H2)/100g.
R   = meets moisture test

Refer ASME Sec II Part C –Specifications for Welding Rods, Electrodes,and Filler - SFA 5.1:
E7018-1 having an increase in the manganese content could reduce the Ductile/Brittle " transition" temperature and improve the low temperature impact values of the weld metal.

Hi Chandulal

This test is related to anodic and cathodic protection of metal structures. Two different metals can stand near each other in air without having any effect on each other, as air space is an insulator). When the metals are in water (an electrolyte) it's a different story as they are able to form an electrical bond through the water (water is generally regarded as a conductor). Differing metals occupy a different position on the Anodic Index, with some being described as more noble than others. The more noble metal is less susceptible to galvanic corrosion than the less noble. To protect the less noble steel from attack, a sacrificial anode is attached to it, which will be eaten away instead of metal. This whole process only takes place in an electrolyte, in this case, water. It's a problem in the marine world, but without this process we generally wouldn't have batteries in the form we know them, and the very protective coating known as galvanising originates here too.
