Dear Experts,

The Data sheet for Control Valve calls for Seat Material of Trim as Stellite 6 + ENP and Supplier is offering SS 316.
Whis is better - Is it Stellite 6 + ENP or SS 316?

Info: Service to be used is Sour Service.
Temperature : 60 Degree Centrigrade
Inlet Presure: Max. 0.5 bar g
Otlet Presure: Max. 0.3 bar g

Appreciate to see response ASAP.

Regards
VPV

Hello VPV,

Stellite 6 alloy is a common material for valve seats  both for sour and non sour services. S.S 316 is not the exact replacement for Stellite. 316 S.S basically lacks the strength and hardness which is required in a valve seat to avoid galling and erosion. Any one of those can cause "passing of valves".

Please look in MR-0175 -part -3 on the acceptance of Co alloys for sour services.

Should you be interested I may forward you some more information  which I have.

Thanks.

Hi,

Stelliting is done for hardness purpose to avoid wear due to friction durings its operational life

Hence stelliting cannot be replaced with SS316

Dear VPV
For SOUR gas application you must consider effect for hydrogen cracking means you have to consider body material, seat and ball material etc. What will be minimum temperature of medium?
Regarding TRIM  you have to go stellite 6+ENP  but you have further check ball and other parts material. Also  for SOUR specially Gas application valve you have to consider fire safe and related certificate.

SS 316 is suitable for this situation.
SS 316  has superior resistance to corrosion for services which are corrosive for 13Cr (F6).
