Hi,

Do we need separate wps for repair or the wps we used in production will be sufficient as per ASME B31.3,
and using the  PQR which used in production , can I qualify repair wps.

Thank you

Dear,

We may use the same procedure for repairing the welds as per clause 328.6 ( If there is no special requirement from client), which say

328.6 Weld Repair
A weld defect to be repaired shall be removed to
sound metal. Repair welds shall be made using a welding
procedure qualified in accordance with para. 328.2.1,
recognizing that the cavity to be repaired may differ in
contour and dimensions from the original joint. Repair
welds shall be made by welders or welding operators
qualified in accordance with para. 328.2.1. Preheating
and heat treatment shall be as required for the original
welding. See also para. 341.3.3.

How ever this clause is applicable only for the systems which are not placed in service, Refer clause 300.

Intent of the Code

(1) It is the intent of this Code to set forth engineering
requirements deemed necessary for safe design
and construction of piping installations.
(2) This Code is not intended to apply to the operation,
examination, inspection, testing, maintenance, or
repair of piping that has been placed in service. The
provisions of this Code may optionally be applied for
those purposes, although other considerations may also
be necessary.

Hi

You only need to prepare the repair procedure wherein your production WPS will be referred.

Dear,

The statement in the clause 328.6 say, the grove shape of repair weld may be different from the original weld joint.

Check paragraph 328.6 & 328.2.1.
Since grooves for repair could differ from grooves for production, you may need to write a new WPS. However, you may support this WPS with an existing PQR if the essential (and supplementary essential in case of impact requirements) variables match

Dear Sir,
These paragraphs refer to Sec IX in general with additional requirements from B31.3 and do not specifically state that a separate Repair WPS is required. However, most clients demand it. What we have done in such cases is to run 2 PQRs, one with test coupons (more than 1 usually) having repairs at various depths/sections as per the client requirements.
