What is GOST 1050-88 CT 3? Is it equivalent to ASTM A36?

GOST 1050-88 CT-3: Carbon structural quality steel gauged bars with
special surface finish. General specifications [Replaced By: GOST
14959]: Carbonaceous and Alloyed Spring Rolled Steel Specifications
Incorporates Amendment 1: 11/1982, Amendment 2: 12/1985, Amendment 3:
12/1986, Amendment 4: 06/1987, Amendment 5: 01/1989, and Amendment 6:
02/1993 [Replaced: GOST 1050] The said standard has been replaced with
GOST 14959: in which the Grade of Steel you desired is CT3(Russian):
ST3(English) steels, general purpose steel for Structural steel usage,
It comes in Various profiles known as Russian steel Profiles, the
chemical composition of this material is almost same except that of
Carbon content which is less than that of A36, and it can be used up
to -70 deg C with impact testing, but before using I would suggest you
to confirm its Yield strength and tensile strength by comparing the
percentage elongation.

Hi,
I worked in Russia and hope to share some info with you. The problem
is that Russian standards and specifications are different from ASTM:
There are different GOSTs for different products for the same CT-3
steel.

Steel CT-3 is no longer listed in GOST 1050-88, it is now listed in
GOST 14959-79 which is a product specification for Carbon and Alloyed
Spring Rolled Steel.

In addition, the same steel is listed in various product
specifications:
GOST 535-88 for round bars and shapes.
GOST 14637-89 for plates and sheets.
GOST 8479-70 for forgings.

Typical chemical composition for CT 3 (killed) is: C (0.14-0.22), Si
(0.15-0.30), Mn (0.40-0.65)
Mechanical properties: YS 225-245 MPa min, TS 370-480 MPa min, A
22-26% min (depending on the product thickness). So, it is very close
to A-36.

Hope, it is helpful
