MT before or after PWHT?

Dear Expert,

 

Currently I work at fabricator of Pressure vessel and Heat exchanger,

During Renewal ASME, AI question about MT shall be done before or after PWHT ?

Kindly  advice for this matter

Dear Azam,

It is bettter to do after PWHT, so that after  stresses are relieved, surface cracks can be detected, if any....

code does not say before or after for sec 8 construction, but it is good  engineering practice to MT before and after for P1 materials. As far as B31.1 power piping u have to do NDE after PWHT for materials P3,4,5,15E

I agree with your answer that commonly MT is done after PWHT.

But in some condition MT shall be done before PWHT,

Still looking for this condition? In which CODE

It is like  whether RT to be done before or after PWHT. 
Similar to RT, prefer to do MT also prior to & post PWHT . 

Defects if any can be rectified  prior hand to avoid double 
PWHT. In fact, MT is much more economical compared to RT. 
We saved a lot following above sequence with Alloy steel 
welding in a petro- chemical project. But choice is yours.

Considering money in END final costs, and that MT is relativity cheap, you could use MT before and after PWHT

 

So, both examination can help you to verify any indication

 

That’s my recommendation and in your place, I schedule END in that way

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Magnetic Particle Examination

 

Advantages:

  • Can detect both surface and near-surface indications. 
     
  • Surface preparation is not as critical compared to other NDE methods. Most surface contaminants will not hinder detection of a discontinuity.
     
  • A relatively fast method of examination.
     
  • Indications are visible directly on the surface.
     
  • Low-cost compared to many other NDE methods.
     
  • A portable NDE method, especially when used with battery-powered yoke equipment.
     
  • Post-cleaning generally not necessary.
     
  • A relatively safe technique; materials generally not combustible or hazardous.
     
  • Indications can show relative size and shape of the discontinuity.
     
  • Easy to use and requires minimal amount of training.

RT before PWHT is what one company, I know of performs and MT after PWHT.

I Googled to find the depth of flaw detection and below is the response I received.

(I thought it was 1/8” but wanted to find out for sure before responding.)

Q: What is the maximum depth that magnetic particles can detect a discontinuity? 
A: 1/4 inch, however 0.050 to 0.100 inch is a more realistic depth.

 

Detection will depend on current AC or DC and wet or dry.
