Dear all

During built-up section beam assembly, if the upper flange is short, is it possible to connect a link of length 20cm and what minimum length can be connection

Thank you

20mm short flange?

No one will approve this.

You may have to change the whole plate.

The shortest length will be L/3.

Engineering allows L/3 as the optimum location for a joint in beams, so the shortest length is L/3.

L stands for full length of beam.

Dear Basem,

First of all, bear in mind that there is a dimensional issue here and normally, this part shall be dimensionally rejected. But the client might decide to give you a chance which depends on the type of connection (moment or shear connection etc.). For instance, if it is only the flange which is short and the connection is a shear type, you have a better chance. Nevertheless, in these cases, you normally have to use a CJP weld with 100% UT or RT and meet the requirements for the weld spacing. In some cases, adding PWHT on this weld makes things look much better in your corrective action proposal.

All said, refer to your specification for steel structures and find all the clauses you need to meet for this job.

20 cm are quite long and the heat affected zones will not overlap.
The weld has to be performed with a WPS which will include:
preheat at 90 degC
Mutipass welding with low hydrogen process
Temper bead which will be grinded flush with base metal.
Then perform RT
