ER 70S-2 in pipeline root welding as per API 1104

Hi

One of our contractors wants to qualify a PQR using root with ER 70S-2 and subsequently with E 8010-1. I have never come across root being welded with GTAW in pipeline. Can any one comment please..??

What is the base material, size and groove ?

 

Technically Nothing wrong in using GTAW with ER70S-2.

Pls do proper PQR, in one of the project I used GTAW for root

Thanks Mr Lakshman...Base material is API 5L X70. Thickness 24 mm, single V groove. Could you please  share the WPS of the project you mentioned?

In accordance with API 1104, the standard for welding of pipelines and related facilities, the root pass welding for pipelines is typically performed using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), also known as manual metal arc welding or stick welding. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), commonly referred to as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, is not typically recommended for root passes in pipeline welding according to API 1104.

While API 1104 doesn't explicitly prohibit the use of GTAW for root pass welding, it emphasizes SMAW as the primary method for root pass welding due to its suitability for pipeline welding applications. ER 70S-2 filler material is more commonly associated with Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) or MIG welding, rather than SMAW or GTAW, and may not provide the desired properties for root pass welding in pipeline applications.

For subsequent passes after the root, API 1104 often recommends the use of specific filler materials such as E 8010-1, which is designed for pipeline welding applications. This electrode is commonly used for root and hot pass welding in pipeline construction due to its ability to provide deep penetration and excellent mechanical properties.

In summary, while GTAW may not be explicitly prohibited by API 1104, SMAW using appropriate filler materials such as E 8010-1 is generally the preferred method for root pass welding in pipeline construction, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.
