To choose filler rod,

Make a table of
Chemical and mechanical properties...
Try to find the highest grade materials,

Choose the electrode properties which next higher level than parent meterials.

Also, consider the another materials property also.

Normally online website are aavailable to choose the electrode.
Try that also

Dear Sir,

Thank you for the response.

lets go in detail , i will quote a example, to start with, i need to weld from material SS-304 to material SS-304,

what are all the consideration we need to look in to,
As you suggested first we need start from material mechanical and chemical properties.
presently what are the ways you recommend, is there a common pool (like website or any specific recommendation of material brand website for referring data sheet) for checking the details or we just google it any random results can be used.
if you could suggest ... any books & website that we can refer for mention any material we can get the mechanical and chemical properties.

screen shot of material properties

Thanks & Regards

Dear Suresh

There are several consumable suppliers that have many recommendations and enough research done on the selection of filler metals to suit your job requirements.

You need to choose from their catalogue / guideline books. As a sample, attached herewith some guidelines for your reference. Likewise, you can enquire to your consumable supplier for your base metal requirements too.

Though many recommendations available, as a welding engineer , you can test for the suitability ( PQR ), Refer as per ASME Sec II-C SFA-5.01M/SFA-5.01 for the consumable procurement guideline, upon successful qualification you can use the selected consumable for your job.

Factors to be considered during selection of consumable,

The base material to be welded ( chemistry, Mech property match etc. )

The welding position ( Suitability )

Regulatory specifications and codes ( as per design code )

Design requirements ( impact )

Post-weld heat treatment etc.…

Thanks and Regards

On the internet you can find tables where they suggest contribution materials, generally these tables are based on the experience of other people in the area.
This table was shared with me in this group.
