Dear Experts,

Tank Material - Group 1
Diameter of Tank - 15 meters

Inspection Recommendation - Replacement of Annular Plate wherever thickness loss observed. Mostly 70% Area will be replaced. Currently the Full Bottom Plate replacement is not feasible.

Configuration of Weld Joint - Single Butt welded joint with backing strip for the Annular Plate joint.

Query 1: Whether Radiography will be required for the butt welded joint as per API 650, Section 8.1.2.9?
Query 2: If RT will be required and if it is not possible, whether UT can be taken.

Hope to see the response with respect to Code and request specific answer against both the queries.

Thank you
Regards, Vino

Ans1) yes, spot radiography is required with 50% on radial joints.
2) pls check appendix U for the same.

Dear Prasad

Thanks for the response. However, I understand that Section 8.1.2.9 does not refer to RT requirements for Group 1 materials. In that case RT won't be required for butt welded Annular Plate I believe.

Thanks and Regards

Hi

I believe you are repairing the tank.

If so, as per clause 12.2.1.4 of API 653, each annular plate joints shall be radiographed where the shell course rests on the annular plate.
