Hello everyone,

My question is, Why ASME BPVC and other standard codes discarded the 'U' notch impact testing?

That I know sir, but I want some more information behind this topic why they discarded U notch and For every material they are not using U notch or for which materials U notch is used?

U- Notch for Charpy impact tests used to be followed  DIN standards, back in 1970s. In fact DIN standards used to provide an option for both Notch types. Correlation of impact data was never easy.   It’s discarded since then.

It’s a matter of basic understanding : a V notch generates more stress than an U-Notch, Hence materials exhibiting good impact with V Notched specimens  would easily meet the criteria in U-Notch conditions not the other way. Notch toughness is an extremely critical property for engineering design.

Anything good under worse condition(V-Notch) is more reliable that something performed under ideal condition (U-Notch). Engineering codes, material properties  have matured  and improved leaps and bounds over the. Hence adoption of V-Notch Charpy impact test is an example of that principle.

Hope it clears your doubts.

Thanks.

Hello Pradip sir,
Sir, can you say about, any metallurgical difference we get on the fracture surface and is there any change in fractography on both v and u notch test samples
