Gents,

I have encountered a WPS where manufacture used different brands of SAW wire and flux in single PQR to cover the range of various brand.
Is it permitted to qualify a single PQR with different brand in same weld ?

We can make separate PQR with each brand and can combine those PQR in a single WPS. But welding a single coupon using different SAW fire /flux combination is not yet experienced before. Could you please shed some light on this scenario ?

Plate : SA 516 Gr.70,

Wire F7P8EH12K :  ESAB/LONCOLN/Bohler

Thanks & Regards

Dear,

If the company used different brands of wire in a single test coupon,  then it can be considered as a change of variables like process, filler wire etc, as per QW-202.2(b).  In this case, the deposited weld metal thickness for each brand of wire shall be noted and the range of values arrived at using the table QW-451.1

Hope this helps.

Hello

Consumable Manufacturers mentioned in the e-mail are globally renowned for their performance. Even though fluxes are  said to be "neutral"-  results obtained of each manufacturer will be different. Hence good Engg judgement / practice will be to use flux-wire combination of one trade/supplier.  You may not experience any problem as long the wire/electrode (SFA 5.17 EH12K) remained as single brand .  'As welded" mechanicals will be fine even if some flux mix -up.

In your case, however, coupon is being prepared to qualify with PWHT & Impact  tested @-80degF.  You are suggested to look at QW-254 & QW 404.35 of Sec IX for direction.

In my opinion, NEVER mix up wire & fluxes of different manufacturers when qualifying /developing WPS/PQR.

Hope this helps
Amitabh
