Gentlemen,

Is PWHT can be avoided if the welded head (2 piece construction) performs normalizing after forming ?

Head MOC : SA516 Gr 70, 45 mm thk, fabricated by welding the blank in two pieces.

Complete vessel not required PWHT.

Thanks & Regards

Kindly get a data from design team for fiber elongation if code of construction is divViii and if it is grater then 10 percent PWHT is mandatory.

Hi

PWHT is required for 45 thk, normalizing is separate heat treatment and cant be combined with stress relieving,

Regards,

If dish normalised no need to do PWHT.

Normalizing done for head -ok
then how about the weld  of head with shell?

Thanks&Regards,

Hi,
If you heat treated 900°C , then no need to do 610°C.

Normalizing said to heat the steel, above  critical line, A3 and Acm lines and cooling in room temperature (cooling rate normally 500 to 1000°C/hr. For Steel, SA516, Gr70, Carbon is about 0.2% and heated  about to 900°C

PWHT is heating below critical temperature(say around 650°C) and heating and holding and cooling rate are controlled(often below 100°C/hr).

For pressure vessel purpose, ASME Sec VIII, Div1, Table UCS-56.1 is normally followed.  For thickness, 45mm, Div2 is suggested. Heating and cooling rates are normally followed per ANSI B31.1, Table.132.

Most of the pressure welds, requiring PWHT, are Procedure Qualified, including PWHT.

So, Normalizing and PWHT are not comparable. We need more data like hardness, grain size etc after heat treatment.

PWHT required specific holding time and controlled cooling as per sec VIII Div.1. Normalizing having air cooling after reaching at 900 deg c.  Since normalizing not required specified holding time and controlled cooling, will it substitute ?

Hi
Generally CS sa516 plates supplied in.NR condition i.e heating to above Ac3 about 900c and cooled in still air

As per ASME code Welded vessel above above 38mm nominal thk.req PWHT below Ac1as per UCS56 of course for sour /lethal service all the Vessels req PWHT irrespective of.nominal thk.

As I understand it  correctly ,
there are two joints  in Head.
So need PQR to be qualified with Normalising .
Ensure consumable strength  withstands this Normalising .
Div 1 is lenient about the Normalising HT of the Weld and Head.
Mfg has to establish the procedure thr SOP and need Test coupon as a simulation Fabrication Test coupon.
Attach the FTC as an extension on Head and test it . Shall comply to SA 516 Gr 70
Only Normalising would have been suffice but there are joints . so pl follow PWHT as per UCS 56 Table 1 after Normalising .
Let head shall undergo PWHT separate if your Vessel is exempted of PWHT due to Design
