In our current project UNS S31254 ( PNO 8 Gr No 4)
We useing a filler wire ER2594 (Fno 6 )

Can we use above wps for this project with filler metal ER2594  Please guide me

If essential variables doesn't change , and impact not applicable, then you can use WPS.

 Dear Mr. Elavarasan,

Since your earlier WPS is qualified for P No 8 Gr 1 base metal with ER316L filler (F6), and your current

project base metal is UNS S31254 (P No 8 Gr 4) with ER2594 filler (also F6 but different alloy), you

cannot directly use the existing WPS for this project without requalification.

The change in base metal group (Gr 4) and filler metal alloy composition is an essential variable requiring

a new WPS and PQR qualification as per ASME Section IX.

You should prepare and qualify a new WPS using UNS S31254 base metal and ER2594 filler metal to align

with ASME Sec IX requirements and ensure weld integrity.

C Sridhar.

UNS 312254 falls under the category of Super Austenitic stainless steel and commonly know as 6Mo alloy or 254SMO.

The Filler wire you are using ER 2594 is not correct and it  is for Super Duplex stainless steel with alloying ellements on lower side.

The correct Filler metal to weld UNS 31254 is  ERNicrMo3 for which the F-No is 43 and hence you cannot use the existing WPS.

Thanks & Regards

The plate designation seems to be wrong
UNS 312254
The designation shall be
SA 240 UNS 31254
Pl correct if I am wrong .
Pl mention what is service process application ?
For TYP31254 , ERNiCRMo10 shall be used if PREN  required is higher and pitting corrosion is prime requirement

I suppose Mr. Viswas is looking for the process details. Normally these materials are used in Refinery & Petrochemical plants.

1. If it is a Pressure equipment check in the design data sheet.
2. If it is a piping, then get the piping class from ISO dwg and refer in Piping material specification for the process fluid such as nitric acid etc..

Thanks & Regards

Dear Elavarasan Mech,

For SA-312 UNS S31254 (Super Austenitic Stainless Steel), ErNiCrMo-3 is often a better choice of filler wire compared to ER2594. While ASME Section IX does not provide straightforward rules for filler wire selection, it is essential to rely on manufacturer recommendations or consult welding consumable catalogs for guidance. Additionally, a summarized electrode selection table, reflecting current industrial practices, is available in API 582.

UNS S31254 ( PNO 8 Gr No 4) is 6% Moly and 18% Ni
Filler wire ER2594 (Fno 6 ) is 4% Moly and 10% Ni

So cannot use

Use Er NiCrMo-3 instead. Its F No. is 43

So need to Re-qualify

Thanks
