Welder Qualification API 1104

[TDK YOKESH]

Dear experts,

I am qualifying 2 welder on 20" pipeline. One half welder by welder A and other half welder B.  The RT result shows Welder A side failed and Welder B side passed.

Query : Both the welders are rejected as the coupon has failed or should I consider welder A and welder B passed.

Any code reference or interpretation on similar case will be helpful.

Hi TKD Yokesh,

 

I believe this requirement included in API 1104, 2020 edition, clause 6.1, which is still in the draft stage, not yet approved and published. This means this Code is yet to be a legal document. I did not see this clause being mentioned in 2018 or earlier versions.

Anyway, the answer to your query is as below. This sounds sensible , when each welder is welding half- circumference of the pipe. That’s not the case when 2 welders weld on the same coupon, each of them welding the entire circumference.

Appreciate your answer on this subject . Hope this clause shall provide a straight answer to people who have this concern of misinterpreting the code . We have cases where people  expect a direct answer to this kind of question in code .
