Dear Experts,

Please give me the guide for Hard facing Overlay:
We did a) Visual Examination, b) LPT, c) Hardness Test, d) Macro, e)
Weld Metal chemical analysis.
Is there any other mechanical or other test required for HFO like
Tensile or Bend test required?
Please guide me with ASME Sec IX 2010.

Refer QW-453.

I suppose there is no other requirement as mentioned in your mail.

Dear Pal,

Chemical test is not mandatory for HFO.
There is no other tests apart from what U have mentioned.

Hi
Assuming that you are running a PQR, As per ASME Sec IX , QW-453 following test are required for procedure qualification of HFO:
(3) The hard-facing surface shall be examined by the liquid penetrant method and shall meet the acceptance standards in QW-195.2 or as specified
in the WPS. Surface conditioning prior to liquid penetrant examination is permitted.
(7) After surface conditioning to the minimum thickness specified in the WPS, a minimum of three hardness readings shall be made on each of
the specimens from the locations shown in QW-462.5(b) or QW-462.5(e). All readings shall meet the requirements of the WPS.
(8) The base metal shall be sectioned transversely to the direction of the hard-facing overlay. The two faces of the hard-facing exposed by sectioning
shall be polished and etched with a suitable etchant and shall be visually examined with 5 magnification for cracks in the base metal or the
heat-affected zone, lack of fusion, or other linear defects. The overlay and the base metal shall meet the requirements specified in the WPS.
All exposed faces shall be examined. See QW-462.5(b) for pipe and QW-462.5(e) for plate.
(9) When a chemical composition is specified in the WPS, chemical analysis specimens shall be removed at locations specified in QW-462.5(b)
or QW-462.5(e). The chemical analysis shall be performed in accordance with QW-462.5(a) and shall be within the range specified in the
WPS. This chemical analysis is not required when a chemical composition is not specified on the WPS.

You have covered all the tests as per QW-453.
Regards
Prem Nautiyal

Dear Expert
As i have weld deposit to 4-5mm ERCoCr-A on Astm A36 and 1.6mm finished thick of weld metal from base metal.
1. on 1.6mm I have made chemical analysis, my doubt is that did i need to verify the element of chemical avilable for ERCoCr-A filler wire from ASME Sec II Part-C.

If i check Fe value is not meeting to Filler wire, As the Base metal having Fe about >98% and filler wire 3% on dilution and taking test at 1.6mm it is not achievable.

Kindly suggest some inputs on this requirement

Dear sathish,

On overlay.chemical analysis will be related to PREN (Pitting resistance equivalent number) not to asme sec II part C.

Dear Mr.Ragul
Thanks for the response.

How to ensure that PREN meeting the chemical analysis. I have tested Welding of ERCoCr-A PTAW powder with ASTM A36, SS316L, F11,F22,F91 MATERIALS.

Can you provide which standard or value to refer for acceptance and how to check the same?

HI,
Actually when i worked in Aramco project,They recommended min PREN value for overlay portion as per SAES.

common formula for PREN value=%cr+3.3 X Mo%+16 x N%

What you have welded is not a Corrosion Resistance overlap, it is a Hardsurfacing overlap, in which no PRN required. Only Hardness value is required. Thanks

Dear Sir
But in QW-453, Note:9 mentioned for chemical composition for hardfacing overlay procedure qualification testing?
