Dear expert 

As per ASME SEC IX in WPS  joints design sketch is required or not  .our client commented in our WPS need to add sketch (like root gap, root face ,included angel )please guide me

Though joint details are non-essential variables as per ASME Sec.IX, those details need to be addressed in the WPS. If the GA drawings indicate clear sketch with these client required details, then only non-essential variables to be mentioned with ref to GA drawing else sketch need to be indicated in the WPS>

Dear Mr. Elavarasan,

As per ASME Section IX, a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) does not strictly require a joint design 

sketch, but it must address certain variables such as groove design and root spacing. These variables are 

considered non-essential for most welding processes, meaning changes in them do not require requalification 

of the procedure. However, they must be specified in the WPS to guide the welder.

1.Groove Design: While a change in groove design is a non-essential variable for most processes, the WPS should 

   specify the types of joints permitted in production. Stating "all groove designs" is not acceptable; instead, the WPS 

   should list specific types (e.g., V-groove, U-groove) or reference a drawing that illustrates the allowable joints.

2. Root Spacing: This is also a non-essential variable. The WPS should address root spacing but does not need to 

    include a sketch. However, if a sketch or drawing is used, it must be accessible to the welder and accurately depict 

    the joint details.

Client's Request:
Your client's request to add a sketch (like root gap, root face, included angle) to the WPS is reasonable for clarity and 

to ensure that the welder understands the joint requirements. While not mandatory, including such details can enhance 

the WPS's effectiveness in guiding the welder and ensuring consistency in production welds.

Best Practice:

• Include specific details about the joint design in the WPS.

• If a sketch is added, ensure it is clear and accessible to the welder.

• Alternatively, reference a manufacturing drawing that includes these .

Joint detailed dimension need not be mentioned because one WPS may be used in different type of joint configuration. Example, Butt joint, T joint, Corner joint, Edge joint & Lap joints.  For Particular joint details, you have to mention Asper Production Drawings.
