Piping WPS/PQR and Welder Qualification Compliance- ASME IX or ASME B31.3

Dear Sirs
Appreciate if you could provide clear and definitive response.

In my Yard Piping WPS/PQRs and Welders Qualification comply with ASME IX only.

ASME IX specifically developed as  Qualification Standard for Welding,Brazing, and Fusing Procedures;Welders; Brazers; and Welding,Brazing, and Fusing Operators
ASME B31.3- ASME Code for Process Piping.- (Design/Construction Code)


As For Welder/Operator/Brazer Qualification& Piping WPS/PQR Qualifications- what is mandatory code- ASME IX or Design/Construction Code ASME B31.3?


For example High Pressure Piping ASME B31.3 Chapter IX shall be complied for WPS/PQRs and Welder Qualifications.
Yes, PWHT requirements one need to comply with ASME B31.3-Table 331.1.1

Does that mean ASME IX requirements superseded by ASME B31.3 Chapter IX?
Where and when one shall comply with ASME B31.3 instead of ASME IX.?

You need to follows your code of construction (B31.3 in your case) in addition to ASME BPV IX. If piping is designed to B31.3, then you need to follow the requirements of B31.3

Hi,

Please note, ASME section 09 is not a design code, it is just a supporting document for other ASME Design/Construction Code. Only Design/Construction codes such as ASME B31.3, ASME 31. 1, ASME Section 08 Div. 1, 2, 3 & ASME B31.4, ASME B31.8 etc. provides the rules for fabricating a component not the ASME Section 09.

The Design/Construction code requirements come on the top, in the hierarchy of fulfilling the requirements. In your case you need fulfill the requirements of ASME B31.3.

pl ref ASME B31.3, 328.2 & 328.2.2 for welding qualification , it is clear that u have to carry out qualification as per Sec 9 plus additional requirement of B31.3

All the qualifications are conformed with ASME Section IX,But if any conflict arises with IX and B31.3,in this case B31.3 (CONSTRUCTION CODE) supersede all the requirements.

Example Qualification by others is prohibiting by section IX(INTERPRETATIONS IX-95-27 & IX-98-02)

But B31.3 accepting the qualification by others clause 328.2.2(INTERPRETATIONS 31.3-26-34)
