Dear Experts
I need a clarification on AWS table 4.1 vs 4.10
As per table 4.1- for 3G position WPS shall be qualify for vertical position only
As per table 4.10 - for 3G position welder will qualify for Flat, Horizontal, vertical.

My doubt is if i have a WPS for 3G uphill position, can i use the same WPS for 1G&2G also ?
If not please explain.

Hai,

If your welder tested in 3G Position he can weld F,H & V Position.

3G PQR Will support only Vertical Welding.

If you need F&H position you need to establish New pqr with 2G position.

AWS Table  is very clear for WPS PQR.
For each position ,PQR is needed .

Qualify PQR positions based on  envising Production Welding Joint positions.

For Welder , range for Qualified position is given based on WPQ tested position.

Older version of code referred in the query.

These are 2 different entities.

Table 4.1 is applicable only for WPS / PQR Qualification and hence you cannot use a WPS qualified in 3G position for 2G position WPS and you need to qualify a WPS for 2G position (according to Table 4.1 2G WPS qualifies for 1G position WPS also).

Table 4.10 is exclusively for Welder Qualification.

There is an ambiguity in section 4.19.1 which refer to Table 4.11 as below.

In the Latest AWS D1.1 2020 edition it has been corrected.

Hence the Welder who welded WPS for 3G position is also Qualified to weld 2G & 1G position.

With 3G WPS, you can qualify welder in 3G position which gives qualifications of flat, Horizontal and Vertical position to welder.

But for welding in Vertical, Horizontal and flat position you need WPS qualified in 2G and 3G position as per AWS D1.1.

But in AWS D1.6; qualification in one position gives qualification range as all positions.

Hi,

Position is non essential, that's why not required addition WPS & PQR.

Don't write anything, it will confuse others.
It's not Asme sec IX we are talking about.

Refer AWS D1.1...position is essential variable...PQR in 3G position qualifying vertical position only.
2G qualify flat and horizontal

Dear Dinesh,

Please Keep in Mind that Procedure Qualification & Welder Qualification have different Criterions for Range of Qualified Welding Position.

For Procedure Qualification, Clause 6.4(AWS D1.1 Ed:2020) explains about the Range of qualified Welding Position.(Directing to Table 6.1 for Plates & Table 10.8 for Tubular Products). You can refer Table 6.5 for PQR Essential variable changes Requiring Requalification.

For Performance Qualification, Clause 6.16.1(AWS D1.1 Ed:2020) explains about the Range of qualified Welding Position .(Directing to Table 6.10 for Plates & Table 10.12 for Tubular Products). You can refer Table 6.12 for Welding Personnel Performance Essential variable changes Requiring Requalification.

With regards,

Hello Manikandan Sir

Sir, can you tell me where I can find that welder is qualified for which position? and if the welder is qualified in any one of the positions, then in which other position welder is eligible for welding using one qualified position.
In which code can I find this position's qualifications of the welder?

Thank you sir
