Dear Sirs,

Anyone can help me to explain the method of electrode selection? for AISI 4130 and A681 L6 materials to weld for repair.

Also, please write about normal practice?

Thanks and Best Regards,

Venkat. G

Most fabricators select ER80S-D2 filler rod, which produces welds with a high tensile strength ( note, consider that S-2 fillers clean impurities better than D-2 fillers). In any event, do not use 4130 filler, as the weld will not have sufficient ductility unless it undergoes stress relief.

Selection of welding filler metals is a serious engineering process and requires knowledge and experience in material engineering and metallurgy, mechanical design and corrosion engineering (as a minimum). In short, you need to be a welding engineer to know how to select filler metals for any welding application.

In this case, E8018 series would be a general choice but you must consider the chemical composition and select matching filler metal composition (E8018/ER80S filler metals are not the same). Additionally, you need to know your Pre-heat & inter-pass temperatures and PWHT parameters.

These all depend on the case. I recommend you to consult a qualified welding engineer. Doing these kinds of demanding jobs with online Q&A is not a good idea.
