Dear all
Good morning.
I want to qualify PQR for  SA516 GR 70  which electrode and filler wire i should use for that Qualification..??

Dear Sujit Kumar,

SA 516 Gr. 70 is a low carbon fine-grain steel suitable for low temp. service. Heat input to be controlled to get good
impact properties.

The HAZ is roughly divided into three sections.

1.    The section adjacent to the weld shows a dendritic microstructure made of large pearlitic grains on a ferritic fund.

2.    The section in the middle shows a ferritic and pearlitic assorted grains of a similar size.

3.    The section apart from the weld shows ferritic and pearlitic grains on a fund of larger ferritic grains.

4.    The base metal, not affected by heat, remains the same, i.e. assorted pearlite and ferrite grains.

SA 516 Gr, 70 is easy to weld using SMAW & GMAW if it is a plate. You can avoid using the GTAW process and this

process is generally recommended for root welding of CS, AS, and SS pipes and full welding of SS, AL, CU, Ni, etc.

SMAW/GMAW/FCAW follows GTAW to economise the welding, where ever applicable or you can use SMAW all the

way up to cap pass or SMAW followed by SAW/ GMAW/ FCAW if the material thickness is 20-25 mm and above or

for higher volume production.

Towards, consumable recommendation:

ER 70S-2 (with triple de-oxidizers) for GTAW root application and E 7018 for filler & cap passes (or)

E 7018 / E7016 for root, filler and cap passes.

ER 70S-6 for GMAW, E 71T-1 (or) E 70T-5 for FCAW and EL8 / EM12K for SAW processes.

Pre-heating to 100-1500C and inter pass temp. are recommended for thickness above 20 mm.

Sridhar.

yes this material quite common to qualify P1G1/G2 qualification in one go!..
you can use ER70S-3 and E7018-H4R...with preheat/pwht applicale as per asme-ix.

For filler wire ER 70 S2
For electrode E 7018
For electrode with impact testing E 7018-1 shall be followed.

Dear Sujith,
There are many filler wires/ elctrdoes  can be used for this material welding ,
we need to consider mainly application where this plate mateial will be used before selction the consuamble type /welding process to be used.

SMAW electrode selection based on joint type: Full penetration joint with single side welding :  E6013,E7016/ E7018/E7018-1(for MDMT: -29 & below applications)
for double side weding or root by other process :  E7018/E7018-1 can be used
GMAW /GTAW: ER70S-2 up to -30 deg C & above impact applications&  ER70S-6 /ER80SNi-1is recommded up to -50deg C
FCAW: E71T-1/E71T-1C/E71T-1M  for  double side welding or root by other process
SAW: EM12K/EH12K with recommended flux by different manufacturers. - doiuble side welding or root by other process

Thanks & Regards,
Srinivas Rao
