PQR test required

Hi Teams,

want to know while qualifying PQR is RT is mandatory if use pls. give reference.

RT is not mandatory according to ASME sec IX. 

1. It is to help you for destructive testing sampling you can discard the defective location.

2. Most of the customer expects RT examination

3. Additionally you have an provision to prefer UT in lieu of RT

Dear Manoj, 

RT is not required if your welding code is ASME SEC IX, As per ASME only mechanical testing shall qualify PQR. in some of the client specification NDE examination shall be carried out on PQR test coupon, same as required for production welds 

however it is highly recommended to perfrom RT/UT/ Surface NDT(PT/MT) for PQR test coupon to know to discontinuities/defects locations to extract test coupons and avoid failures during mechanical testing, it will save both money and time for successful qualification of Procedure.  

 if your code welding is ISO 15614 you need to carryout both NDT & Mechanical testing for PQR to qualify.

Some customer also request surface LPT after complition of test coupun welding.

Thesee are additional test requiemts to ensure joint  is free from any defects.

It is not mandatory to conduct  Volumetric NDE as per ASME Sec IX. It's your choice.  The contractor prefers because of time-saving to avoid rejection during testing.
