Dear to all,

I would like to ask you about the combination of pqr's

I have PQR A - 8mm (gtaw+smaw)
PQR B - 21.5mm (gtaw+smaw)
Both the pqr's were impact tested

now i want to make a wps using the 2pqr's as the thickness range 8mm to 43mm with impact requirements.

I require suggestions on this. Please give comments n valuable answers

Chandra
Welding Engineer

Chandra

My thinking is QW-200.3(f) when impact test not require.
Must refer to QW-200.4(b) but reading that para, still confuses.
Could anyone suggest more???

Best Regards,
Chandra

Though asme ix permit combination of two pqs to make one wps, yet that does not mean that 2 pqr could be indiscriminately be combined. You can combine 2 pqr if there is overlap in essential and supplementary essential variables of the 2 pqr. For example the requires reduction of 55ºC as essential variable and increase of more than 55ºC in preheat as supplementary essential variable.
If your case you pqr A preheat = 50ºC , then range qualified = 5- 105 and
Pqr B preheat  = 170 , then range allowed = 115 - 225.
Since there is overlap between the two examples,  then both can not be combined.
Note,  the figures stated above are just examples not real figures.

you can not exceed the base metal thickness qualified with the PQRB

If the code governing the job is B31.3, then the qualified range shall be T/2 ~ (T+1/4”).  In this specific case, PQR A qualified 4mm ~ 14mm and PQR B qualified 11mm ~ 28mm, so your range shall be 4mm ~ 28 mm.
