Dear Experts,

I have a doubt of the interpretation of SA572
I chemical analysis it states "A Copper when specified shall have a minimum content of 0.20% by heat analysis (0.18% by product analysis)."

I want to interpret the meaning of specified. Is it PO or MTC.

My case is, contractor has purchased the material of structural steel. Their PO dose not mentioned that certificate need to me mentioned about Cu content, but in Lab test certificate the % of Cu is mentioned and it comes below the minimum requirement. The material shall be accepted or rejected.

Can you please clarify the matter.
I am expecting your valuable input and reply.

Hi Biplab,

Please below the scope of this steel as indicated in SA 572. Also refer the attached data sheet. Generally this steel is used in bridge construction or transmission towers, where weathering resistance is important. Presence of copper helps in that.

What would be the application of the steel in this case ?? If for outdoor application then presence of copper would be beneficial as stated previously. Accordingly the PO should be written or modified as required.

Appreciate your response.

Thanks.

Grades60 [415] and 65 [450] are intended for riveted or bolted construction of bridges, or for riveted, bolted, or welded construction in other applications

Cu us helping on grain refinement. It is increasing also the strength through precipitation in ferrite matrix. In higher amounts it can be detrimental. Therefore I wonder why there is no an upper limit

Dear Goswami,

This steel will be used for pipe structure in refinery construction. The area is not much corrosive.
