difference between fusion and penetration

Dear Experts,

What is the difference between Fusion & penetration?

basically same but if u can see with naked eye that is penetration (protrusion of weld metal at the root), fusion can not be seen with naked eye unless etched.

Dear Rahul,

Fusion: the process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity. the process of causing a material or object to melt with intense heat so as to join with another.

Penetration: the action or process of penetrating something.

This is the difference.

If we search for the difference specially in the field of welding, it could be:

Some welding processes are categorized as fusion welding which we need melding during welding. In these processes we have fusion+penetration such as SMAW, SAW, ... .

In some other kinds of welding we have penetration without fusion such as friction welding (FW) or resistance welding (RW). We named these kinds of welding as solid state welding or non-fusion welding.

Fusion means Two materials filler/electrode and parent metal should fuse or melt for good penetration.even there is good fusion some times those two not penetrate each other.
