No comments regarding the equivalency or use of A36 in place of A234.

Dear Syed,

Firstly A36 is just one common carbon structural steel, this steel plate can make common tanks, but not pressure vessels.Because,As a professional steel supplier,we knew when rolling A36,no need to do Ultrasonic test, but for pressure vessel used steel, they have to be done Ultrasonic test.

Second, your said A234 is one pressure vessel steel, actually another pressure vessel steel ASTM A285GrC is similar to A234.

It would be dangerous if using A36 to replace of A234,Freind.

Dear members,

Can a plate to ASTM A36 can be used to manufacture TEEs to A234 WPB, is there any restriction in BPV or B31.3 on the use of A36 plate for manufacturing A234 Tees.

One of client says A36 is for general purpose and cannot be used for making a pressure containing component to be used in oil and gas production . Is it correct, if yes why? And if not can you please provide me a technical justification, I could not find anything B31.3.

Thanks & Regards

dear Syed,

strictly, code, there is no limitation on raw material for the products to be certified as per A 234, except it shall meets with chemical requirements of particular grade.
If specific requirements based on service (like NACE), then restricted chemistry applies.

regards,

Hello Syed,

You should use A-36 steel for making fittings. Please see the materials requirements for A 234 fitting vs. the Scope for A-36 material. The text narrated below  is self explanatory. Any killed grade of C-Mn steel would be a good substitute for A-36 subject to the design requirements.

Thanks.

Materials 5.1 The material for fittings shall consist of killed steel, forgings, bars, plates, seamless or fusion-welded tubular products with filler metal added and shall conform to the chemical requirements of Table 1. Unless otherwise specified for carbon steel plates, the steel may be made to either coarse grain or fine grain practice

Dear syed .

I  hope you are from gerab ,Dubai ,

As per the A 36 plate standard , This plate can not use  in Pipe construction or in the Fitting construction .

because it is structural steel material grade.

where our application of ASTM A 234 WPB fitting is in process piping .

Both are Different ,

We faced same Problem in one of our reputed customer , but finally on the basis of the Chemical composition and mechanical test perform on laboratory and satisfied customer and End users .

Submit one stated letter from the manufacturer to Client about the suitability of  raw material .

Thank you very much

Best of regards
