ASTM G48A test is a very aggressive test. It’s like a Go-No Go test, with respect to Pitting. Usually, this test is not called for in SS 316L. For all Offshore Oil & Gas application usually this test is called for Duplex & Super Duplex Grades , 6Mo & Alloy 625.
The temperature and the duration of the test are important. See the temperature of the test to be adopted vs the duration in the ASTM G48A specification.
Typically, if one tries to exercise the common conditions for testing on DSS/ SDSS on SS 316L then Failures are inevitable. It’s good to know why this test is called for on SS 316L and what’s the intended service? Please ask your client. If the intended service is offshore , then the testing temperature & duration should be the least applicable as per ASTM G48A.
Generally speaking, ASTM, A 262, Practice E or C are the recommended corrosion tests for SS 316L.
Refer the attached blogs for some additional guidance.
Thanks.
