Dear Sir,
For SS316L material, we performed the Pitting Corrosion Test ASTM G48 Method A in accordance with the client's specifications and acceptance criteria, and we followed ISO 17781 standards in accordance with the client's standard reference.

We failed the test, and the weight reduction ranged from 50 to 500 g. It should be 1g according to the standard.

Can somebody advise or explain why this test failed?

Can u let us know what was the type of material pipe or plate or whether it was welded?

What is the Testing temperature, normally 316L is suitable at 10degC.

If the root is oxidised due to inadequate purging, there may be a possibility

ASTM G48A test is a very aggressive test. It’s like a Go-No Go test, with respect to Pitting. Usually, this test is not called for in SS 316L. For all Offshore Oil & Gas application usually  this test is called for Duplex & Super Duplex Grades , 6Mo & Alloy 625.

The temperature and the duration of the test are important. See the temperature of the test to be adopted vs the duration in the ASTM G48A specification.

Typically, if one tries to exercise the common conditions for testing on DSS/ SDSS on SS 316L then Failures are inevitable. It’s good to know why this test is called for on SS 316L and what’s the intended service? Please ask your client.  If the intended service is offshore , then the testing temperature & duration should be the least applicable as per ASTM G48A.

Generally speaking, ASTM, A 262, Practice E or C are the recommended corrosion tests for SS 316L.

Refer the attached blogs for some additional guidance.

Thanks.

This seems surprising Client specification calling for G48A Terst for 316L. What is the service and what is the level of Chloride ppm in service. What is the PREN requirement.

Please share the Snap shot of Client spec.
