Dear Expert,

“X” welder working with company and left the organization. Again after Two or three year he is joining back same company. All earlier certificate is available with company with proper documentation.

Is it possible to renew his earlier certificate with one sample based on RT or visual inspection OR All new qualification is to be done New. Qualification code is ASME SEC IX.

Pls provide your valuable input with standard reference.

Thanks & Regards,

Mohd. Azam

Welder X should go for Re qualification because he left the company and he Re joined after 3 years and a welder qualification is required if he didn't welded any joint for 6 month in the same location or same company.

Dear Azam,

Welder Qualification shall be performed by each Qualifying Organisation according to ASME Sec.IX.

Yes the previous Qualification made by the X welder before leaving the organisation will be valid by qualifying a single test coupon for that process.

Hi,

Can that welder be checked for any documentation for the similar works after he left the organisation. I mean that welder might have been working in different organisation but what if he/she had been working with the same welding parameters (this is just to say about his consistency in welding) and these documents are available?

Can that welder be waived off to re-qualify based on these documents as this will prove his consistency.

Hi Mohd. Azam,

Please look though the following extracts from Sec-IX. It’s advisable to test and qualify the welders separately  and before assigning them in production joints.

Thanks..

Dear Azam,
in my opinion considering only ASME Sec IX,
1) if you are confident on the Welder's skill , you can take advantage of ASME Sec IX:2013, QW-322.2 by arranging a test using each processes that he was previously qualified. only process is important. material, shape, thickness, positions and electrical or other parameters are not restricted. After visual you can go for RT in lieu of Bend test. This will revalidate all his previous qualification with the same PROCESS(s).
2) if the welders ability is under doubt or he was not successful in (1) above, retests for all his previous qualifications has to be carried out (QW-322.2(b))

Dear Mr. Mohd. Azam,

please refer QW 322.1 for expiration of qualification and 322.2 for renewal of qualification.
For your case qualification has expired as per 322.1(a) and re qualification should be done as per 322.2 (a).

Regards,

Anosh Wankhade
