Dear Sirs,

Greetings !

We are in process to perform WPS/PQR for SS446 to SS446 combination.
Welding done on 20 mm thick plates using ER430 filler.

Test coupon passed for Tensile test but it is getting failed in Bend test .
Need your expertise opinions /suggestions  to complete this WPS/PQR with satisfactory results as per requirements of ASME Section IX .
Especially guidance  to pass Bend test .

Thanks in Advance

Regards
Prasad Loke

You should go to a super austenitic filler metal which is going to provide higher ductility. What is the working environment of the weld?

Hope  you have  carried out PWHT .
If yes , what is temperature and method of cooling .
Read ASME SEC I PW 39-10

Dear Friends,

Remember that SS446 is a high Cr (23-27%) ferritic stainless, in fact it is not heat treatable.

Due to its high Cr content, it is one of the most difficult stainless steels to bend and weld.

For welding, the filler material ER430 provides better ductility due to its high elongation of 25% and should facilitate the bending test.

If the problem persists, consider migrating to ER309 filler metal. It will produce a dissimilar weld, but the ductility improves substantially and it can be bent healthily.

Ramon Briceno

Hello, Prasad,

Ferritc Stainless steels 446 lack ductility. These steels are straight chrome (25% or more) without any Nickel , which causes a significant drop in ductility . Hence welding  of any 400 series is always a challenge, due to fact that bends may fail due to reduced ductility levels, especially  in the weld & HAZ. Once  would need  a  very careful control of welding heat input , if alloy 446 is welded with 430 grade filler. If done so bend samples may pass.

The safest option would be to use Austenitic Filler Metal , E/ER 309 or 310 provided  welds would not undergo any form of PWHT. Note 20 mm is a significant thickness for welding of SS 446.

Thanks.
