Hi sir,
This is venkatesan from singapore.
Could you please clarify on the requirements of ASME Section Viii Div.1 Edition 2013 Section UG84.6?
PQR Base material : SA516 Gr.70 of thickness 38.1mm
Deposited weld metal like GTAW-4mm+SMAW-15mm+SAW-19.1mm
Question: HAZ impact specimen suppose has to be taken based on UG84.6, definitely GTAW process is difficult to cover.
Do we have to take impact for each process or just follow UG84.6 table?
Simply means, Impact test specimen will take for PQR/ PTC as per ASME VIII. Is based on thickness or process?
Thanks
Venkatesan
For two side welded, the base material thickness 38.1mm therefore you should choose the note 2 as below and the CVN sets shall be taken by removed from depth of between 1/4t and 1/2t from weld surface. It mean that the CVN set shall be taken between from 9.55mm from root to 19.05mm from weld surface.
Note “(2) For two sided welds in base metal thicknesses greater than 3/4in. (19 mm), specimen sets shall be removed from a depth of between 1/4t and 1/2t from each weld surface”

A few questions.
Is the GTAW pass your root pass?
If so is it consumed by hot pass?
What’s your primary process after the GTAW?
Is your weld joint welded from one or both sides?

Subject: [MW:23987] UG84.6 IMPACT SPECIMEN CLARIFICATION
Hi sir,

Hi all,
Code: ASME VIII
Condition : PQR/PTC completed with combination of 3 welding process
During testing, impact test specimen taken as per UG84 but 2 welding process not covered due to some reason
(I.e) all 10x10x55 specimen only cover one process out of 3 process.
After impact testing, all results are accepted.
Now, Is these accepted results applicable only for tested one process or initial 3 process?
pls reply with appropriate justification
Thanks
Venkatesan

Hi
All 3 welding process shall be covered for impact testing.
Please confirm the joint is single vee or double vee.
In case if double vee joint what will be the welding process on back side welding or after back chipping, in case after back chipping if smaw process was used, needed to select impact test specimens for smaw and saw process.
Please note that sub size specimens will also be acceptable with subsequent temp. reduction.
Answer for your query: No, 3 welding process impact test specimens are required for acceptance if no back chipping was carried out.
With kind regards
Govindan
