I believe they are referring to hardness testing. In stainless process piping and pressure vessels we need the molecular details of the material, nickle, chromium, w/ heat number, manufacture. And for some things we build ( vacume jacketed pipe, sumps we must cut out test coupons from the actual material perform an open root butt weld w/ GTAW or whatever and cut these coupons into 6" wide strips so they may perform a hardness test of the base metal and weld area to look for excessive heat etc. To verify said weld proceedure doesnt compromise the material
