Hi Pradip
My suggestion is AWS D.10.10/D10.10M: 1999(R2009) – Recommended. Practices for Local Heating of Welds in Piping and. Tubing.
Kind regards

Dear Pradip,

As per API minimum 2 thermocouple shall be used and it' will be increased based on the diameter of the weldment.

Thanks & regards,
M.Sudalai.

You may get some detail in WRC Bulletin 452.

Normally for for ASME vessels, number & location of Thermocouple shall be in compliance with temperature variation during heating, cooling and holding time with respect to specified span of length.

Hi Pradip,

You may refer AWS D-10.10, Fig 12—14 for guidelines on circumferential joints. The guidance is provided from 6” dia pipe to 30” dia pipes, with multiple zones of control.

D 10.10 recommends both Monitoring and Control thermocouples. Control thermocouple/s to be placed right on the weld, while the monitoring thermocouples are to be placed at the edge if the soak band as well as at the edge of the heating band.

Figures from D-10.10 can’t be reproduced due to copyright issues.

Alternatively WRC -452 may also be followed. This document was written in line with AWS D10.10.

One thing to note, in case of discrepancies between your project specification  and Local PWHT codes(e.g AWS D-10.10), the project spec would be more binding. Advice is to get this issue resolved with the concerned welding/ metallurgical engineers and move forward.

Thanks.

Dear Rogelio,

I already searched AWS D10.10 but i did not get any clear idea regarding how many thermocouple to be used during welding/ PWHT  in piping.

Dear Sir,

To my knowledge none of the  code specified the same. It is based on experience and client specification you have to work.
