Hi,
Why we use Carbon steel in Boiler feed water lies? Why not SS?

Dear,

Carbon steel is often used in boiler feed water lines due to its cost-effectiveness and suitability for high-pressure, high-temperature applications. However, the choice between carbon steel and stainless steel (SS) depends on several factors:

  1. Cost: Carbon steel is generally more affordable than stainless steel, making it a preferred choice for large-scale projects where cost is a significant consideration.

  2. Strength and Durability: Carbon steel is known for its strength and durability, especially in high-pressure environments. It can withstand the stresses associated with boiler feed water systems.

  3. Corrosion Resistance: While stainless steel (SS) offers superior corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel, the feed water quality and operating conditions play a crucial role. If the feed water is properly treated and maintained within acceptable parameters, carbon steel can perform adequately without significant corrosion issues.

  4. Compatibility: Depending on the specific composition of the feed water (e.g., pH levels, dissolved oxygen content), carbon steel may be sufficiently compatible. However, in cases where the feed water contains corrosive elements or impurities, stainless steel might be a better choice due to its higher corrosion resistance.

  5. Maintenance Requirements: Stainless steel generally requires less maintenance compared to carbon steel because of its superior corrosion resistance. However, carbon steel can still be effectively maintained through proper monitoring, inspection, and maintenance practices.

In summary, carbon steel is often used in boiler feed water lines due to its cost-effectiveness, strength, and suitability for high-pressure applications. However, the choice between carbon steel and stainless steel depends on various factors such as cost, corrosion resistance requirements, and operating conditions.

Heat transfer differs more in carbon compared to SS, Coefficient of Thermal expansion is high for SS, SS has got higher creep strength to Carbon in high temp & pressure. Cost etc,
