Dear Experts,
One of our contractor purposed PMI for ASTM A105 Flanges due to lake of inspection documents.
As my understanding PMI is suitable for HSLAS,
SS and DSS. For carbon Steel we can check if there is something happened im change of welding consumables for welding.
Please share your experience.

Hi Babur,

Positive material identification is performed using either of the two techniques below:

  • X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyser: This is the most common method and the portability of the hand-held equipment allows Intertek to perform PMI on-site at our customers’ premises. The device scans the metal material and identifies its key elements. However, it cannot detect carbon and some lighter elements and is not suitable for identification of pure carbon steel materials.
  • Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES): This method can detect almost all types of elements including carbon and lighter elements and carbon steel. Although not as portable as XRF analysers, the equipment can be transported to sites and used at high elevations with proper lifting arrangements.

I suppose this issue may be due to non-availability of MTC or due to Heat Number Traceability. If this is the case, then PMI by suitable methods to reveal the chemical composition of the Flange an option

Thanks & Regards

Just to add, the term PMI may not be apt as PMI is used to determine only the Major alloying elements but in this case the Chemical composition as per ASTM A 105 checked has to be checked and evaluated.

Thanks & Regards

PMI will not work in this case...
You have to take samples for mechanical testing...
Tensile and Impact tests are essential for A105...

Dear Khan ;

PMI can be opted but it's not an alternative to chemical testing .  Yor statement " For carbon Steel we can check if there is something happened im change of welding consumables for welding" is not clear ...Can you specify . Well .What about physical properties ?

In case of MTC non Availability or traceability chemical, mechanical and heat treatment condition to be proved.

All test required by A105 and some additional test for heat treatment condition to be carried out.
