Dear All,

Please clarify some below points.

I have previously qualified PQR, details as below.

PQR with ASME sec.IX and B31.3 and API 582.

Process - GTAW (Manual)

Base Metals - ASTM A312 TP304L to STM A312 TP304L

P.No - P8 Gr.1 to P8 Gr.1

Test coupon Thickness - 5.54 mm

First Process - GTAW - SFA - 5.22,  AWS - R308LT1-5 , F.No - 6,

A.No - 8, Size of Filler .M - 2.2 , F.M.Product from - Flux-cored, Weld Metal Thickness -

1.5mm.

Second Process - GTAW - SFA - 5.9,  AWS - ER308L , F.No - 6,

A.No - 8, Size of Filler .M - 2.5 , F.M.Product from - Solid, Weld Metal Thickness -

4.04 mm.

According to red highlighted (Second process) can I use to prepare WPS.

And Thickness range 1.5 mm to 8.08 mm, other all parameters in WPS shall be as above in red highlighted.

I don't want to use the first process.

Please let me clarify, if any changes, please guide me to prepare WPS.

Regards

KK

Yes you can but it will but the base metal thickness will be larger than the deposited weld metal thickness.
The base metal thickness range will be based on the total thickness of the test coupon

it seems that
You do not want  to use ROOT PASSS WITH FLUX CORED filler wire and want to use solid wire with backing gas.

The  query is tricky one.
it has many variables

Joint design :Welding with backing  to  Welding without backing
Backing gas :Addition of backing gas with Solid  filler wire

Qw 404.23  and QW 402.5 are there but not that clear to support your  query.

Advice :Qualify PQR with backing gas with Solid Wire ER308L for root pass as well as filler passes.

Dear Vishwas /  George,

Please I need more clarification on my above query.
Can I use the second process or not, if not please clarify my doubt with code reference.
And if yes also, please update me, what are the parameter shall I mention in WPS.

And thanks for your response.

Regards
Kiran

Above are the Code classes you need to look at.

According to ASME Sec.IX Yes you can prepare WPS for the existing PQR.

Dear Kiran,

The query is tricky one. Bt pl note that you have qualified PQR wIth Flux cored welding wire for root pass and then filler with Solid  filler wire .

Refer QW404.23 , Filler metal Product form is essential . Though you are not using that flux cored  filler for root pass  and want to use ER 308L Solid wire with backing gas  , ASME SEC IX  is not that clear to address this  query straightforward.

Advise - Qualify new PQR

Dear mr.Karan,
Can u please confirm the service design temperature or any impact test done during PQR if done confirm the test temperature.

If Impact test is Applicable it will Qualify from 2.02 to 8.08 mm

Thanks,

According to our specification for stainless steel not required an Impact test.
But MDMT is -196°C so Shall I required an Impact test.
Please advise me what are the parameter shall i include in WPS.
Regards
Kiran

Base Metal & HAZ are exempted from Impact test but required for weld metal at -196degC.

Dear Mr.Karan,

You need to be qualify a new procedure , you cannot be use ER308L in place of R308LT-5 at root pass due to the following reasons...

1. As per ASME IX 404.23 change of filler metal product form is essential variable
Means change from solid to flux core & vice versa

2. No where in ASME section IX is stating & suggesting that u can change the sequence of filler metal used in different layers of weld metal used by a single process

That means in your case the both type filler metals are used by same process that is GTAW so no sequence of change from root pass filler use in 2nd and other passes and vice versa.

If you use two different process like GTAW +SMAW in this case u can use the process individually or combination as per section IX

3. Asme section IX 404.12 change of filler metal classification is supplemental Essential variable impact test required due to design conditions (below -104C design temperature). Please check the filler metal trade name of this two mentioned filler wire.

Hope answer to ur query.

Best Regards
Ahmmad Ali
