Lateral Expansion - High Alloy Impact test

Dear Metallurgists ,

Could you please explain that,

why lateral expansion value of Min. 0.38 mm given in ASME Sec VIII Div I , UHA-51 for Charpy Impact Tests, instead of Joule Value for High Alloy steels like Duplex, Super Duplex etc.

What is the significance of Lateral expansion for such High Alloys.

Lateral expansion is a measure of ductility in addition to absorbed impact energy(impact values). Austenitic alloys always fail in ductile mode , with very high impact strength. Higher the ductility more is the LE. As these alloys have an inherent ductile nature , causing high impact values, the other way screen them is though lateral expansion.

Some alloy steels shown better relationship between actual impact properties with lateral expansion instead of joules value of absorbed energy. This has been practiced in papers specially in case of high absorbed energies.

Dear Pradip Ji,

Thank you for your reply .

Being new to the company, when I review the previously tested PQR on 2012 for Duplex UNS 31803 , i have found the following issues :

1) Only Joule value issued for Charpy Impact Test , tested at -51 Deg C and all the values are more than 100 J , but Lateral Expansion value is not mentioned in test report.
    Can we still accept this Test report as per ASME Sec VIII Div I, UHA 51 to use for ASME jobs?

2) In Chemical Analysis, the obtained Nickel is 7.12%, but as per ASME Part II C, SFA 5.9, ER2209, the range is 7.5 to 9.5 %, 
    I am sure this is not acceptable, isn't it ? 

    Ferrite Analysis is Min. 40% obtained, Micro, Macro , Pttting Corrosion as per G48 method A and other test results are acceptable as per ASME-IX requirements.

But unfortunately, the above 2 issues were overlooked by the former QC and well renowned TPI in Korea, they signed WPS & PQR alongwith this report.
