Dear Krisanu Bhunia and Experts,

FOR WELDER QUALIFICATION TEST

I would like to share my experience as below, ( correct me if I am wrong. )

From Quality point of View:

·         First thing is “ Welder qualification test” is done to determine the ability of a welder

to deposit sound weld metal.

·         Sound metal means a quality weld at first time. ( without making visual defects like cracks, undercuts, porosity, excess reinforcement, Etc. )

·         As per ASME SEC IX, the only visual criteria you could find as mentioned below:

·         QW-194 Visual Examination — Performance

Performance test coupons shall show complete joint

penetration with complete fusion of weld metal and base

metal.

From Production Point of View: -  During the test, If a welder making undercut or with Visual porosity – please reject him, before your client does the same, since this welder if qualified  - he will make more undercuts and porosity in the Job and uses grinder repeatedly / wastes precious time schedule of the project / off course increase the work of Welding Inspector and cannot make a productive output results. Hope you got the message.

AND FINALLY – Client have to decide !

Regards,

Sathish

Jazan, Saudi.

Dear Krisanu Bhunia,

Refer to clause no. QW-191.1.2.2 (b) (3) Qualification Test Welds of the ASME Sec IX - 2015 -- Assuming test coupon is greater than 3 mm.
You can get the acceptance criteria for cluster porosity.

Dear krisanu

Hi

For cluster porosity  acceptance criteria you must characterized the type of material and specification and then interpretation this imperfection.
