Dear experts,

We have do the C45 Material welding process, ID- 1310MM OD- 2200MM x 150MM(THICKNESS) + OD 1306MM X 50MM (Thickness). Double side "V" Groove, Which type welding process suitable Pls suggest & Pre heating , Inter Pass Temp, PWHT method.

            Mr. Balaji,

Yours is a C45 material (0.42-0.50% C), Double-V (150*50 mm thick) weld joint. You can use SMAW (E7018 - 3.2/4.0 mm

size & bake electrodes as required and limit exposure to ambient humidity) for root pass (ground to sound weld metal and

DP checked later) at the junction.

For the SAW process, use ER80S-G (or equivalent) with a suitable agglomerated flux. For the GMAW process, ER70S-6

(1.2–1.6 mm size) with 80%A+20% CO2 as shielding gas is suitable.  Alternatively, E71T-1 (for FCAW) or a metal cored

wire-matched to C45 (for a higher deposition) are recommended.

Preheat the joint to 200–300 °C and maintain an inter-pass temperature within ≤ 250 °C (preferred 200 °C). PWHT at 620 °C

(range 580–650 °C), hold 1 h per 25 mm thickness on the thickest section → 6 hours for 150 mm, controlled cooling ≤ 50 °C/h

down to ~200 °C, then air cool. Measure preheat/interpass with a laser gun, carry out hardness mapping (HRC/HV) after welding

and after PWHT, perform UT as required and maintain records.

Perform a WPS/PQR qualification using your chosen combination (SMAW root + SAW/ FCAW/GMAW fill & cap) and perform mechanical tests as per code.

Weld in balanced sequence (alternate sides/back-to-back) to minimize distortion on the large ring.

Hope the above info. will be of help to you.

C Sridhar.
