Dear All,

In my project Slip on flange to Pipe We have 7 mm gap .. Pipe have ovality

Now my client saying to us to do buttering at flange at machining

If we do buttering at flange its allowed in the code book

Please guide me

Best regards

Please see UW 42 of ASME Section VIII Div 1.  A butt welding procedure is enough for buttering.

UW-42 SURFACE WELD METAL BUILDUP
Construction in which deposits of weld metal are applied to the surface of base metal for the purpose of:
(a) restoring the thickness of the base metal for strength consideration; or
(b) modifying the configuration of weld joints in order to provide the tapered transition requirements of UW-9(c)
and UW-33(b) shall be performed in accordance with the following rules:
(1) A butt welding procedure qualification in accordance with provisions of Section IX must be performed for
the thickness of weld metal deposited, prior to production welding.
(2) All weld metal buildup must be examined over the full surface of the deposit by either magnetic particle
examination to the requirements of Appendix 6, or by liquid penetrant examination to the requirements of Appendix 8.
When such surface weld metal buildup is used in welded joints which require full or spot radiographic examination,
the weld metal buildup shall be included in the examination.

It's for butt joint what about flange inside buttering to reduce gap between pipe and flange (slip on flange ) ...

There is any heat treatment required for flanges

Thanks for your reply

Hi Friend,

Instead of flange buttering and re machining you can go for a layer build up on the pipe, and particularly for your case pipe has ovality, then as per the gap positions you can deposit single layer or multiple layer and have a proper grinding to give proper fitup to flange.

Hai brother,

It's correct I have suggested same .. but my client told me to do buttering inside flange to close gap between pipe and flange due to ovality

Now my question is there is any code allow to do buttering at flange

If yes means .. there is heat treatment necessary for that

Thank you for your reply

Best regards

There is no code for the same,

However as suggested by some of our friends, same WPS can be used for 1 or 2 layer deposition.

And regarding heat treatment – it depends on the MOC, flange size, thickness, deposited weld thickness, and any more heat treatment done during manufacturing etc has to be reviewed,

And finally – convince client once again  - that it is some tolerance matter and pipe ovality issue and not the flange concern.

If the pressure ratings are of nominal, than no need of all these manipulation, you can directly weld it.

Thanks & Regards,
