Weld Map - WPS PQR

Respected Experts,

Had a discussion at a customer site on subject.

Is Weld Map a must for each - WPS PQR, like a vessel fabrication drawing has?

Please share, some knowledge. We need to weld process pipes ranging from 2" to 16" (seamless sch. 40 to sch 160) and hence the request.

Weld map is part your QC documentation to correlate each weld or a group of similar welds to the applicable WPS. it can be either a line sketch, tabular or in any other form. 

You can prepare an index of all the WPS applicable for this project and indiacte WPS number against the each piping class. it is the easiest way.

It is not necessary.
Usually we include the joint type details along with WPS.

Dear Mr. Vinod.

It's not necessary but customer could be asked for this as its giving at a glance idea for your qualified WPS range which is acceptable for his job or not? So if you had submitted your WPS then customer can verify or Approve the same.

Hi all

Weld mapping is the process of assigning information to a weld joint to enable easy identification of its design (WPS), production (welders, their qualifications, date welded), quality (visual inspection, NDT) and traceability (heat numbers of materials joined & welding consumables). 

Weld mapping should also incorporate a pictorial identification to represent the weld number on the fabrication drawing, in case the designer does not nominate a weld number. 

To manage this multi-stage labour intensive record keeping activity, cloud-based welding management software such as Smart Welding Manager, with its Android and iOS tablet apps will reduce the workload and minimize the errors as it distributes the work across the production hierarchy.

Dear Vinod,

let me ask you a Question.

Incase, the WPS No. & the Joint No. is not prescribed in fabrication Dwg, 

and if you have 20 no. of weld joints in a Vessel, which is to be welded with 3 different WPSs,

for example GTAW only for below 3" Nozzles , GTAW + FCAW combination welding , GTAW + FCAW + SAW combination for Long Seams ,

you have to give each Joint No. , the applicable WPS No. for that Joint and NDT method for those joints, that is the reason that the customer is asking for a Weldmap .

If customer requests you to issue Weld Map , then you have to submit it and to make them understand with full details of Welding .

Simply submitting only the WPSs for all of the 20 No. of weld joints would make confusions and mess, even to your own fabrication team also.
