98%Ar+2%O2 or 98%Ar+2%CO2

Dear All,

Please comment on the weld metal properties of GMAW welded ASS with shielding gases 98%Ar+2%O2 and 98%Ar+2%CO2. How a shielding gas among these two will be selected.

depend on the mode of transfer,

for Gas details pl refer SFA 5.32 for details instead of random selection.

Dear Mr. Sankalp,

As per AWS 5,32 following shielding gases are used for various metals.

AWS SG- AO -2       -----   98 Ar + 2 % O2 is used for SS 

AWS SG- A              ----- 100 Ar  for Aluminum  (or) 

AWS SG- He A-25   -----   75 He + 25 %  Argon  for Aluminum  (or) 

AWS SG- AHe-10    -----   90 Ar  + 10 %  Helium for Aluminum.

AWS SG-C               ----- 100 CO2  for Carbon Steel  (or) 

AWS SG- AC-20      -----   80 Ar + 20 % CO2 for Carbon Steel   (or) 

AWS SG- ACO -8/2 -----   90 Ar + 8 CO2 + 2 % O2 for Carbon Steel.

Other mixture gas ratios are also available for CS but, above are generally recommended.

o2 is better than co2 for ass, but either one can be used.
