Hi,

It’s allowed by Sec VIII, DIV1. Please see the highlighted clauses as below.

Thanks.

Subject: PWHT Segment Wise for 9 Meter Dia Vessel

Dear All,

We are fabricating a Vessel of Diameter 9 Meter at Site, requires PWHT: Material Grade SA 516 Gr. 70.

For Circumferential Joint PWHT can it be performed Segment Wise as diameter is more??

Pl. Confirm as per ASME Sec VIII Div 1 can it be done in Segment Wise.

Although no restriction in code preferable methoud could custom build modular furnace (with panel construction) at site

It is straight forward method for cir seams, however for long seams you have to work a methodology for placing coils locally using WRC 452 guidelines, probably  supplimented with an FEA to check thermal stresses

What diameter can your furnace accommodate?. 9 Meter seems to be Big.

There are some options if your Furnace cannot accommodate.

1.  Try for a Temporary furnace with proper insulation and Heating arrangements. Hope there are some subcontractors available.
2. Try for LOCAL PWHT of the seams.
3. Below option may be useful if you have difficulty accommodating the Length in one Heat.

Thanks & Regards

Dear Vishal
As I understand  correctly , the vessel circumference is 9 mtr  and  your query is that you want to carry out the PWHT of the Circumferemtial seam in segments.

The answer is No . You have to carry out PWHT  of  ENTIRE Circumferencial joint in ONE cycle.
You can do it by LOCAL PWHT method by wrapping Electric Resitance Coil on job and attaching job thermocouples.

Many HT contracter are doing such type jobs regularly.

Dear Experts and Goswami Sir,

The most technical preferred method is definitely the full furnace PWHT, no doubt in it. However, there are situation where localized PWHT has to be performed is unavoidable. An example is the Pressure Vessels which are in service vessels and the process demands PWHT. I don't have much confidence in temper bead technique.

Dear Raghuram,

Just for knowledge purpose. Do ASME Sec.VIII Div.I the applicable code permit LOCAL PWHT of Longitudinal seams.

Thanks & Regards

Thank You Experts for Valuable Comments.

As per discussion in trailing mail, Conclusion: as per Code localized PWHT Segment Wise using Induction Coil Heating Method can be considered for this Job.

Dear Jayakumar
Not exactly. UW 4-(a)(8) covers everything else. As i mentioned it is not a preferable/recommended method (either go with Modular or Internal firing are most appropriate).

"provided that other measures (based upon sufficiently similar, documented experience or evaluation) are taken that consider the effect of thermal gradients,
all significant structural discontinuities (such as nozzles, attachments, head to shell junctures), and any mechanical loads which may be present during PWHT.
The portion of the vessel or component outside the soak band shall be protected so that the temperature gradient is not harmful".
