Dear Experts,

Can you please guide me regarding PAUT (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing) instead of RT. Our contractor has recommended PAUT due to RT process is slow and it will be affected the project schedule. So, they are pressuring us to do PAUT instead of RT.

Is it good NDT technique & which standard shall i follow for the acceptance criteria.

Please share the testing method and acceptance criteria, if anyone have.

I'm waiting for your valuable advise in this regard.

PAUT is faster than RT for sure and can be substituted for RT. It infact can detect all the defects better than RT and with more precision. However it again all drills down to the skill of the operator performing & interpreting results after PAUT & you need to have sufficient space on either side of the welds for better scanning and subsequent results.

Acceptance criteria shall be as per the construction code only. e.g. ASME B31.3 for the piping jobs. Testing method should be certified by a Level III qualified personnel in accordance with the job requirements.

It is always advised to be quite sure of having a well qualified personnel in case if PAUT is to be used.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Firend
P/Array is reliable method can be used in liu of RT and very fast and no hazard
However you should have instrument and qualified person to carry and interprete the process

There are NDE/NDT vendors who take up the NDE by  P/Array  However you require to qualify the mock up prior to NDE test  depends upon thk,Metallurgy etc
Regards
Hegde

Hi Ganesan,

ASME code case 2235-9 allows this technique for DIV-1 construction, in lieu of RT. The following links will help you to understand the complications involved.

As stated below by Prakash Hegde establishing the integrity, reliability  of this technique in additional to operators’ qualification and experience is important. So as convincing the AI s.

As regarding this technique, please go through ASME Sec V. Requirements of technique and other requirements are clarified in details.

Thanks.
