Dear Sir,,

I have one PQR with 3 mm GTAW weld deposit and 6.5 mm SMAW deposit. Base metal thickness is 9.5 mm and impact is not required.

Please correct me if any of the following is NOT correct as per Sec IX

1) Combined Process (GTAW + SMAW) up to a thickness of 1.5 to 19 MM (2T)

2( Single process wps of SMAW with weld metal thicjness 13 MM and qualified base metal thickness is 1.5 mm to 13 mm

3)  Single process WPS of GTAW  with weld metal thickness of 6 MM and Qualified base metal thickness is 1.5 to  6 mm

Please help!!

irrespective of single process GTAW / SMAW used the BASE METAL thickness range qualified is  1.5 - 19mm

others acceptable.

But for SMAW single process you have to give Metal baking as the GTAW weld Metal act as metal baking.

Backing is a welders qualification essential variable. For PQR it is a nonessential one.
The Base metal qualification range is the same for the 3 cases

Dear Riaz

Ur understanding is absolutely correct as per QW 451.1 of sec IX. However, WPS for SMAW will be with Backing.

My humble doubt is, 1 ) weld metal deposition is restricted to be max 6 mm for gtaw, and 13 mm for SMAW, what is the advantage of having 19 mm as  Qualified base metal thickness. For separate process there is no advantage of Base metal Qualified as per QW-451 ie 1.5 to 2T

AM I RIGHT ???

Dear Riaz,

Advantage is to reduce the no of WPS. A single PQR (Combined process) can be used to prepare three different WPS or even more within the range qualified for weld deposit and base metals thickness.

Further, in WPS, we also mentioned the range qualified for individual processes.

This is best of my knowledge. if I am wrong, correct me,

Many advantages like:
1. Partial penetration welds
2. Combination with other processes
3. Welding of small bore piping with GTAW

Inaddition to what George has highlighted

1. For a dissimilar thickness weld between Base Material 6mm thick to 19 mm thick example like a shell to dished End and a skirt to a shell.
