Dear expert,

We observed transverse cracks after completion of fillet welding.
We are using EA2 filler wire in submerge arc welding and parent materials is E 450.
Please give us advice to resolve this issue.

Thanks & Regards

Which flux/ wire brand  is used?
What is Fillet size?

Hi
There is a tendency of Cracks in Fillet weld
if
Set up is not proper I. e  uneven at matching /mating  surface causing distortion
There should be strong tack weld on both ends and on opposite sides
Improper st up causes heavy stresses on weld causes cracks
 Regards

Hi,
during fit up 100 mm tackweld done on both side joints. i observed that after 1st pass i was check LPT after 24 hrs & found there is no crack. but, after 3rd pass of welding observed transver cracks overall 12 meter length

Dears ,
Mo. in EA2 wire have a tendency for hardness increasing after reheating especially with active flux ,
u can try to use neutral flux or use Mn Si wire

Best Regards ,

It seems to be like Hydrogen cracking.

1. Check whether your SAW Flux Baked properly in recommendation with Manufacturer.
2. Clean the weld surface free of oil, Grease, Paint etc..
3. Check the ratio of mixing old flux recovered after welding with new Flux.

Thanks & Regards

Thkness of tack weldshould be thicker
And no gap in fit up
Preheat is prefered

Hydrogen cracking is because of below.

1. Presence of Hydrogen. (By proper Baking of Flux for SAW and a clean environment can be reduced).
2. Susceptible Microstructure like Martensite (which can be prevented by Preheating and Heat Input)
3. Stresses (May be Internal or External, by proper alignment using Tacks and reducing the cooling rate it can be avoided).

Hi Kishore,

What’s the width of the fillet weld at the 3rd pass?

Is you welder trying to deposit a single pass fillet weld for the capping pass or following a multi-pass weld to finish the capping run.

What’s the voltage involved?

If the width is typically > 4 x Core Wire Diameter , with higher voltage say > 35V , centerline cracking in SAW welds may occur.

Thanks.
