State Police Westfield is situated at the 41-mile marker on the
Massachusetts Turnpike. The barracks, which opened its doors in 1957,
operated continuously until the early 1970s when the barracks system
was disbanded, leading to its conversion into a part-time facility. In
the early 1970s, the barracks was even closed and listed for sale by
the Turnpike Authority. During this period, officers assigned to
patrol the westernmost sector of the area reported to SP Lee, while
those covering the easternmost sector reported to the Chicopee
Maintenance Facility at the 52-mile marker. However, in 1972, the
barracks was reopened as a part-time operation, with a Sergeant
overseeing the day shift at the desk. All calls during the evening and
midnight shifts were rerouted to SP Charlton, which maintained a 24/7
desk operation. At that time, troopers used station wagons to
transport any injured individuals from accidents or those requiring
urgent medical care. By 1975, ambulance services were introduced for
transporting the injured. SP Westfield transitioned back to a
full-time barracks in 1990 and has continued as such ever since.
