It is time to nationalize all of the FDs in the USA.
1. all operations remain as normal until a reorganization plan can be
incrementally implemented.
2. the operating scheme will be simple - USA Fire Chief is in
Washington DC - he/she commands the 50 State Fire Chiefs - the State
Fire Chiefs command the County Fire Chiefs - under the county fire
chiefs - every fire station has a captain
3. dispatching will be simple - each county has at most 1 fire
dispatch center - with very few exceptions - some dispatch centers
will serve multi counties - some states will have statewide dispatch
centers - Rhode Island and Delaware for starters
3A. every fire station will have 2 starlink radios - 1 for the station
captain - and 1 for the front door of the station
4. funding will flow down from Washington DC - just like with DOD or
USPS or Medicare or Fed Ex or DHL or UPS or Chase Bank etc
5. ambulances can be 3rd service or they can be under FDs - we have
talked about this before - Russia has 3 emergency numbers - Japan and
Korea have 2 emergency numbers - USA + Europe + Australia have 1
emergency number - those are the primary drivers of this decision
6. Each State will have a Disaster Chief who reports directly to the
State Fire Chief - disasters have been badly neglected by the USA fire
service - look at Los Angeles and Palisades Calif - 2 huge disasters
and not a single thing has changed since - not a single thing in the
fire service has changed
7. nationwide response time goals can be whatever NFPA says currently
- maybe 5 minutes for initial unit in urban area in 90% of cases -
full response in 12 minutes - 4 minutes for bls and 8 minutes for als
- for starters
It truley is incredible that there are 350 million people in the USA
and we seem to be the only one who is concerned about response times -
350 million people go to McDonalds and they all care about safety and
cost and taste - they vote with their feet and mouths and wallets -
but in the fire service - no one gives a damn about no stinkin
response times (nor any other quality parameters)
If there are 2 or 3 more fires this year that take out 2,000 homes
each - you can bet that Bernie Sanders and AOC will finally notice -
and start squawking - and then the nationalization will become
"urgent"
